Scientists at Southeast University in China have found that garlic can effectively normalize glucose and cholesterol levels in the blood.
The study, published in the journal Nutrients, involved 1,567 people aged 18 to 80 from different countries.
The researchers said the trial subjects included healthy people and those with type 2 diabetes, heart disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, myocardial infarction, obesity, hypertension and polycystic ovary syndrome. Study participants took garlic in natural form, powder form, as well as extracts and nutritional supplements.
The results of the meta-analysis suggest that eating garlic in various forms has a positive effect on lowering blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
Researchers believe that the beneficial properties of garlic are due to its ability to accelerate the production of an organic compound in the body called allicin, normalize blood circulation, have antibacterial activity, and prevent the formation of triglycerides in the liver.
