Member of Parliament Lakshman Kiriera said this today (9th) while attending a press conference held at the office of the Leader of the Opposition in Colombo.
Mr. Laxman Kiriella also stated that according to the gazette notification issued by the Sports Minister, the Chairman and Secretary of the Cricket Board will be able to serve as Executive Members for another 16 years after holding the post for 8 years and after leaving these positions. Mr. Laxman Kiriella further stated that the Union Government will remove the gazette notification.
Mr. Lakshman Kiriella gave further comments and also said:
“Last year, the Leader of Opposition Mr. Sajith Premadasa moved a proposal in Parliament regarding the Board of Cricket Control. Parliament unanimously voted to dissolve the Board of Cricket completely. The opposition pointed out in Parliament that the governing body of cricket is appointed through fake sports clubs. There are as many as 13 sports clubs in Sri Lanka that conduct first-class cricket matches. But the opposition pointed out in Parliament that unqualified people are appointed to the Board of Cricket Control through fake sports clubs. Moreover, the opposition pointed out irregularities, fraud and corruption in the Board of Cricket through the Auditor General’s report in Parliament.
The Sports Minister has issued a gazette allowing the Cricket Board to work for another eight years until the 2024 T20 World Cup. The term of the Cricket Board Chairman and Secretary is two years. If necessary, their term can be extended for another two years. Their maximum term is then four years. The current Cricket Board’s term ends in March 2025.
However, according to the gazette notification issued by the Sports Minister, the chairman and secretary of the Board of Cricket Control may stand for formal elections for the next four years in March 2025, after which they can serve in these positions for another four years. Then the term of the chairman and secretary of the Cricket Board will be extended to eight years.
The opposition asked the parliament to implement the Chitrasiri report which is a report of the Supreme Court judges accepted by the courts. It was mentioned that the government will implement the Chitrasiri report to reduce the number of sports clubs and elect the chairman and secretary of the Cricket Board. But the way the gazette notification is prepared is that the tenure of the chairman and secretary of the Cricket Board will be up to eight years during the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The Cricket Board Chairman has held the position for six years. That is enough time to get used to cricket in Sri Lanka. The vision of the 2024 T20 World Cup is clear and the cricket governing body has approached the International Cricket Council to not resume cricket. Protect your current position.
In many countries of the world, the term of office of the governing body of cricket is 4 or 5 years. But the chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board and the Officials Committee have been in the Cricket Board for 6 years. But Sri Lankan cricket has not developed. If they still have self-respect, they should resign. But the current Sports Minister has taken steps to further protect the chairman of the Cricket Board and the Officials Committee.
All members of the ruling and opposition parties in Parliament said that the Cricket Board should be dissolved. But what was done was to remove the former Sports Minister. Also, a General Affairs Committee inquiry was held into the matter. All these tests were suppressed. The United People’s Power wanted a debate on the matter in Parliament.
According to a gazette notification issued by the sports minister, the chairman and secretary of the cricket board can serve as executive members for another 16 years after serving as executive members for eight years.
Besides, the government appointed a committee headed by a cabinet minister to look into the issues of cricket administration. The report of the committee is yet to be received. As a former sports minister, I also testified before the committee. I have requested the execution of Chitrasena News.
Besides, the Provincial Cricket Associations have former ministers or councillors. The president of the Central Provincial Sports Association is the former chief minister of the Central Provincial Council. The secretary general has a term of 25 years. The heads of the provincial cricket associations are political power. When the cricket board receives money, these people also receive money. This has become a huge mafia. The government wants to keep these corrupt people in these positions and get support in elections. With this, the game of cricket in Sri Lanka is going downhill. All these gazette notices will be repealed by the upcoming coalition government. ”
