The resurrection of the Mitsubishi Colt could not have come at a better time: the already proven small car exhibits innovative technology and becomes an ideal interface in terms of price/performance ratio.
Over the decades, the Mitsubishi Colt grew into a small car legend and a public favourite – until a few years ago, when a completely misguided model policy brought the company to its knees. Within the Renault and Nissan conglomerates, this is now history, and the Colt is celebrating its seventh generation, based on the million-selling Renault Clio.
As with the newly launched ASX crossover, this is a smart move. Instead of using the old French Laundry, the Japanese can rely on current technology. In the TT test car, this is the 143-horsepower hybrid version that has just become the test champion in a car magazine. After hundreds of test kilometers in Tyrol, this is no surprise to us. Painted in “Royal Blue Metallic”, the four-meter-long compact presents itself as a surprisingly mature vehicle.

Of course, the hybrid petrol engine system with a system output of 143 hp and 205 Nm contributes to this. The engine combination of the 94 hp four-cylinder and the 49 hp electric motor is connected to a six-speed gearbox, which itself can choose between four levels for the combustion engine and two for the electric motor. This works very well. As a result, you often drive around the city purely on electric power, but you can also turn the hybrid Colt into a very confident sprinter.
Thanks to its own weight of 1380 kg, driving is certainly easy and rarely required. Of course, all this also has an impact on consumption, which rarely exceeds six liters, but is often less. When driving downhill, the fuel-efficient but smaller 1.2kWh battery can also be charged relatively quickly by recuperation.

The Colt also lives up to its billing very well, having been tested in full “diamond” configuration. High-quality materials for a vehicle of this class meet the operating requirements of conventional buttons and rotary controls with a raised screen. The connection to Apple Car Play works smoothly. In the mix, digital instruments also facilitate the urge to play. Life on board is very pleasant for a four-meter-class car like the French original.
Even the seating position is suitable for taller drivers. No one actually needs a car anymore, especially since the “Diamond” is actually in the middle of the next higher car segment with equipment details such as all-round parking cameras, a Bose sound system, adaptive cruise control or wireless mobile phone integration. In winter, heated seats and a warm steering wheel please the Tyroleans.

The 301- to 979-litre boot is good for that, but in terms of variability, there’s little to nothing about this small car. At least the rear seats fold down in a 60:40 split.
A mature vehicle with above-average technology and equipment for its class. The price is low for Mitsubishi. The already well-equipped entry-level petrol engine is currently on sale at “Inform 24” for 14,999 euros. Our hybrid top model costs 28,999 euros. Mitsubishi is currently deducting a bonus of 1,000 euros from this. A five-year warranty covers all model versions.
