Lifting restrictions on poultry imports from South Africa

The Ascension Island Government has announced that it will lift the import ban on all poultry and poultry products from South Africa with immediate effect. This means that all poultry eggs, chilled and frozen raw meat and raw offal, which were previously banned from import, can now be imported into Ascension Island.
The decision was made following a veterinary risk assessment conducted on St Helena in response to the outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in South Africa. The assessment showed that the risk of transmission of the virus through imports from South Africa is currently low. As a result, the ban on imports from South Africa has been lifted.. The ban on St Helena was also lifted last week.
South Africa has implemented strong biosecurity measures to effectively control the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza since September 2023. These measures include regular monitoring and the establishment of non-infectious avian influenza (NAI) quarantine areas to ensure that the export of live poultry, poultry meat and eggs is controlled.
It is important to note, however, that the ban on all poultry and poultry products in the Falkland Islands remains in place and the situation will continue to be reviewed regularly.
