A local food producer has been praised for its “bold and innovative” popcorn flavour combinations, winning four Great Taste Awards.

Ballasala-based PopCornaa led the Isle of Man at this year’s awards ceremony, with 10 Isle of Man food and drink producers receiving the globally recognised star rating.

The gourmet popcorn maker is one of two local businesses to receive the coveted three-star rating, with its vegan seaweed, wasabi and soy flavoured popcorn earning the distinction alongside Ballacosnahan Farm’s Manx Loaghtan sausages.

Organisers said they would only award three stars to products that were “extremely delicious”.

Shop owner Emily Tse said:

“I’m really pleased to have received a three-star rating, with the judges describing it as an innovative and very enjoyable flavour combination.

“It was a huge risk to bring a humble snack to market in a bold new way, but I believed deep in my heart that the market was ready for a contemporary take on the traditional, commercially produced popcorn snack into something that was magical with every bite. This award is inspiring and fuels my passion to keep working for what I believe in.”

Clare Barber MHK, UK Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Farming, said:

“It’s fantastic to see so many local producers achieve such strong results. These awards provide a benchmark of quality for the industry and allow winning products to stand out to new audiences around the world.”
