We live in a chaotic world, an era of great technological and technical progress, but also facing numerous economic and political crises, facing the constant threat of global wars and disasters, local wars, conflicts, population migration and poverty, poverty, huge populations, huge wealth, power and influence of a small number of groups, under the constant pressure of the big countries on the regions rich in raw materials… The rapid flow of information, goods, capital and people greatly affects people and changes social consciousness and values. system. The big countries dominate the geopolitical and geostrategic games according to their own interests and have no vision for the further development of the world, while small and underdeveloped countries do not ask for anything, they are getting poorer, more dependent and slowly decaying.
Easy promise
In an era of global adverse impacts, when the world landscape is changing dramatically and rapidly, we are still dealing with our identities, interpretations of past events and conflicts with each other. Instead, we should be thinking: What is the real state of our economy and finance? How much debt do we have and on what terms? How many people are actually living in Bosnia and Herzegovina today? How many employees work in the economy that supports a large administrative structure and how many are employed by the administration? How much working-age population will be left in the country after mass emigration? What is the conception of the governing structure to get out of the current crisis? No one is answering these questions.
Without adequate development aspects, the budgets become consumption budgets, social budgets and administrative budgets at all levels, dependent not on economic growth and real incomes, but on tax and VAT revenues. Legislative, executive and judicial authorities and their institutions formally exist here, but they are deeply divided along ethnic lines and subject to conflicting ruling policies. The situation is similar in other areas of socio-political life. Politicians easily make promises about new jobs, while institutions and enterprises are already overbooked with party members and unemployed people.
They also promised foreign investors to come, but despite the huge investments, we neither have adequate infrastructure nor a conducive business environment for serious foreign investors to come. Many cities, most towns and all rural areas have problems with water, sewage, electricity, garbage and roads… Can the situation in culture, education, health, information, security, etc. be described as positive… What about personal income, social welfare and the survival of citizens?
How did we get into this situation?
Every society, like a living organism, develops, changes, rises and falls. This was the path of the former states of our peoples, maintained in a solid community by a leader who enjoyed great reputation in the world and among our peoples. With his death, nationalism was strengthened at home and abroad, and the relations of the international community towards the region changed in favor of nationalist policies. Thus, the transition, in addition to economic and social changes, led to a shift in social consciousness in a negative direction.
Political leaders from all the countries of the region, supported by immigrants and domestic extremist groups, suddenly saw new opportunities and changed the story they had been telling the masses for decades: about brotherhood and solidarity, equality of peoples, self-government… replaced it with a new narrative dominated by nationalism, separatism and religious beliefs of the current political elites and religious organizations. One can understand why political actors who used various privileges for decades and lived well in the previous system suddenly changed the story, but it is debatable what happened in the social and individual consciousness, so that the people who believed in the system until yesterday and their leaders widely accepted their new narrative uncritically. This narrative led to bloody wars, crime, robbery and the destruction of the country’s economic and social structure, as well as the demographic and social disintegration of the entire society in these regions.
With their manipulative and destructive policies, the xenophobic nationalist leaders are taking the people of these regions back two hundred years. Unfortunately, the social and individual spiritual and moral decline that occurred in the 1990s continues to this day. Then, the most vocal nationalists took key positions without knowing what the state is or how it should function. A pyramid of semi-illiterate and submissive nationalist governments was built. They worked and thought only for themselves and their own people, established a cult of nationalist leaders, and created an environment conducive to crime, corruption, the gray economy, and the predatory privatization implemented after the war. In this way, for decades, the ruling elites have gained huge privileges by manipulating voters throughout the country, while the people have accepted the inevitability of their descendants leaving en masse to live in poverty and destitution for the benefit of the country. There is no vision. In conversations with many people, the comments and attitudes I initially heard made me hope for a better tomorrow, but often after a few conversations I was disappointed. Influenced by national leaders and in many ways dependent on them, obsessed with mythomania and extreme national delusion, forgetting real life, many people still live for national ideas, which are mythomaniacal and unsustainable, ignoring everything that can make them successful and happy.
Today, neither the government nor the opposition deals with the realities and problems of life of ordinary people. This leads to a dilemma: why don’t they do things that would increase their approval ratings and benefit them in the election campaign. Are they not skilled enough to see the real situation, or is this situation just right for them? How to explain to people what they see for themselves: that we are small and underdeveloped, lies, injustice, bribery and corruption are rife, responsible work, truth, honesty, justice and morality are threatened… and that we as a society have big problems? For many years, few knowledgeable liberal people have pointed out the harms of such policies and environment for the future of the country. In such an environment, the small number of positive role models is not a rule, but an individual struggle with disturbed social values.
The pattern of rule of the national leaders today is very simple and can be easily observed throughout the region. He impoverishes the people and then seizes the institutions by placing like-minded party cadres in them; privatizes state-owned enterprises and the media with your own and the economic elites’ capital and then misleads the majority with half-truths, misinformation and myths; through state-owned enterprises and your economic elites, promises, hires, blackmails and threatens those whose survival is threatened; keeps them in suspense about the future and constantly hints at threatening plans and events of declared enemies and foreign mercenaries to the interests of the state; prevents free-thinking people from expressing their opinions and implementing useful ideas and eliminates all other dissidents from social life by all means. After that, he ensures his continuation in power through national rhetoric and manipulation of threats to the national society and its interests, all kinds of false promises, new unproductive employment, small donations, vote buying and electoral engineering. The basis of everything is to gather one’s own ethnic group, create insecurity, rebellion and fear of new conflicts and clashes with others among the people, so that the replacement of “those who defend it and protect its national interests” becomes impossible to change. .
In our country, the election cycle for state and local governments alternates every two years, permanently emphasizing differences in outlook, even when they do not exist, glorifying their own roles and victims in the past and in the recent past, and underscoring different notions of the role and structure of the state.
Life is getting harder for the people, but from the war to today they follow the same policies, elect the same politicians without vision, knowledge, morality and responsibility, so everything here operates on lies, corruption, manipulation and agreed conflicts. That is why it is right to ask the question: how to affirm truth, knowledge, morality, responsibility in such an environment… How to build a universal, civilized identity? While many people and environments in the world are working on this, we are digging in the place trapped by our unique peoples and traditions.
Was the creation of Bosnia a great undertaking, as the signatories of the Dayton Agreement told us at the time, or a grand illusion that ended the war but also paved the way for ethno-nationalist policies that froze the status quo, accepted ethnic divisions, and left room for different interpretations by nationalist leaders?
A Captive Future
This ideology, which has been present on the political scene since the war, holds the future of the country in its hands, so today the key question for the survival of the peoples of the region has become: how to change the social consciousness of the region, which is wrongly structured. This situation, because except for a few free-thinking people, everyone obeys the nationalist leaders.
In summary, the state and social situation we have today is the result of the social and individual spiritual and moral degradation under the influence of the conflicting interests of the ruling policies of the post-war period. Now. This reminds the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina how much evil, uncertainty and problems ethnic division and exclusionary malicious policies have brought, but at the same time it also warns that silence, passivity and reconciliation in such situations will bring greater evil..
In order to change the entire socio-economic situation, it is necessary to develop a national identity of the country, because national identity is not something to be questioned in our country, but a real will and desire to build a normal society, in which we will evaluate ourselves according to knowledge, abilities and qualities, and not according to party and nationality. This is a long process, and in my opinion, this political and economic crisis is an opportunity to revive a new, normal narrative suitable for a society that is about to join the European Union, through which we will show the world that we can be better and more normal. If we do not show together that we really want it, no one will help us.
