The Hungarian swimmer, who won silver in the 200m butterfly a few days ago, set a best time to advance to the semifinals on Friday and then set another best time on Saturday night by reaching the finals in 50.38.
The world record holder in that event, American Caeleb Dressel, failed to make the final, nor did recent 200m backstroke Olympic champion Hubert Kós.
Milak, who is waiting for the final, is obviously in good shape. Although we didn’t know much about his condition and feelings before the game, he seems to be very focused on the 100 butterfly final. He definitely doesn’t want to go home without a gold medal.
The 24-year-old swimmer jumped into the pool on the fourth course and finished fourth after the first 50, but thanks to his extremely good hair he took the lead in the last 20 meters and won the final with a time of 49.90, nine hundredths ahead of Canadian Josh Liendo. Ilya Kharun, also from Canada, finished third.
Milak finished second in the 100m butterfly in a European record time of 49.68 as he raced the final five laps, a time he could not match, but the gold medal came in the end.
Honved’s competitors also won a gold and a silver at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, and now the same is true at the Paris Olympics, but in reverse, this time it is the gold medal in the 100m butterfly and the silver medal in the 200m butterfly.
Milhak completed both figures in the French capital. We tried to get him to speak after the final swim but he was unable to speak to the media, either in the mixed zone or at the press conference.
During the medal ceremony, he received the gold medal from IOC member Daniel Djurta and State Secretary for Sport Adam Schmidt, before being congratulated by MOB President Zsolt Gülay and IOC member Balazs Fuyès.
Milak even took a photo with some Dutch fans, but the media remained silent. However, national team captain Csaba Sós made a statement.
Csaba Sós: I don’t know how it is prepared.
“I am happy for Kristof’s gold medal. I don’t want to analyze the moment of joy, one thing is certain, she is the third Hungarian swimmer to win two consecutive Olympic Games after Kristina Eggersegi and Tamas Darny,” the captain began to evaluate.
“We now have 31 Olympic champions from Hubi, and if you look at how Katinka Hosszú, Kós or Milák reached the top through different paths, you can say that the Hungarian system is the most flexible in the world.”
Chaba Soth did not speak to Milak either before or after the game.
“So far, I have spoken to him when he was willing. You can do it with me now, if you wish,” said the captain.
“He’s number one in the world and I’ve never seen anything like it before in terms of the way he swims. Almost everyone is a second-rate butterfly swimmer compared to him if you analyze it. He has such a unique and great technique and I’ve really never seen anything like it before since I’ve seen György Tumpek swim,” Sós said.
“I don’t know much about it either, I don’t know how it was done, maybe one day it will be clear and then we can analyse it. Maybe he has built a method, a system for himself, but I don’t want to guess knowing only my side, that’s not going to produce the results I saw. But he did it, and as Denes Kemeni said, you have to look at the scoreboard, what’s there is what’s there, the rest is nonsense.” He added that two golds and one silver at the Olympics were better results than the average for Hungarian swimming, so overall he was happy with the performance in Paris.
