All eyes were on the track in the northern suburbs of Paris as Julienne Alfred completed the most important 100m race of her life at the rain-soaked Stade de France, defeating pre-race favorite Shakari Richardson and winning the first gold medal for her native Saint Lucia. Ariana Titmus wasn’t good enough to win the title in her latest battle with American Katie Ledecky, but the Australian’s impressive performance in the women’s 800m freestyle was enough to earn her a silver medal. Australia also won two other medals on Saturday night, with Kylie McKeown taking a surprise bronze in the women’s 200m individual medley – due to an American disqualification – while the mixed 4×100 medley relay team also won bronze in the evening’s competition. Thousands of people lined the streets of Paris in scenes reminiscent of the Tour de France as Remco Evenpoel won the men’s road race in dramatic circumstances. Grey Morris had ambitions to represent the All Blacks not too long ago. He used valuable lessons learned during his rugby league career to win a silver medal in a windsurfing competition off the coast of Marseille. The dual national, who was born in Australia to New Zealand parents, couldn’t overtake gold medalist Israeli Tom Luvigni, but Morris was delighted with his second place. “It was awesome,” said Morris. “It was the best competition we’ve ever been in. The American star’s greatness seems to know no bounds as she extended her lead as the most decorated gymnast in the United States with a win in the Bercy Olympic vault final. Jack Robinson was forced to change the design of his surfboard ahead of his semi-final against Gabriel Medina after South Korean officials complained. The Australian surfer usually wears a red and white rising sun sticker on the bottom of his surfboard, but this is considered offensive in parts of East Asia, so Robinson was asked to remove it.
