** Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah signed an agreement with three companies to supply solar energy systems. Murad Ali Shah, while speaking at the Solar Home System Agreement Ceremony held at the Chief Minister’s Residence, said that the Sindh Solar Energy Project will be launched with the financial support of the World Bank. ECNIC has approved the contract at a cost of Rs 27,040 million. The World Bank will provide $10 million in aid for the project.

Murad Ali Shah said the actual cost of a system is Rs55,000 and after 80 percent subsidy, only Rs6,000 can be provided to the beneficiary. Eligible persons for the SOULS system shall be identified from low-income families registered under the Benazir Income Support Program. Even those poor people who cannot afford to pay Rs6,000 will be provided with solar kits under the Ministry of Energy’s annual development plan.

He said the program was launched in 2020, but the subsidy was 40%, while poor households could not afford the 60% fee. Only 322 systems were sold. Now, with support from the World Bank, the subsidy has been increased to 80%. The project was further delayed in 2022 due to catastrophic floods and the Covid-19 crisis.

The Chief Minister said Thar was providing cheapest electricity and 400 MW of electricity would be generated in the first phase and they wanted to provide cheap electricity to the people.

He said that all government buildings will be converted to solar energy systems. Currently, 34 government buildings have been converted to solar energy. They hope that all government buildings can benefit from solar energy.

It is noteworthy that according to the announcement, the Sindh government has launched a project to provide home solar systems to poor households in thirty districts of Sindh, including Karachi. Under the project, 200,000 households will be provided with solar systems for a symbolic payment of Rs 6,000. By the end of October, 50,000 systems will arrive in Karachi for distribution.
