The Delhi High Court, in a scathing critique, said it could not understand why three UPSC candidates drowned in Rajinder Nagar area and noted that such incidents have become disturbingly common and officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) seem indifferent to the same. The High Court handed over the investigation of the criminal case from the Delhi Police to the CBI. The court also noted that senior officials of the MCD might have been involved in irregularities related to infrastructure management.
The court questioned why the MCD officials did not inform the commissioner about the non-functioning of the stormwater drain in Rajinder Nagar which could have been one of the reasons for the tragic deaths. A bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela said that the MCD officials were not concerned and that this had become a norm.
In a related incident, the court struck a sarcastic tone at the Delhi Police’s arrest of an SUV driver in connection with the deaths at a coaching centre, remarking: “Thank God you did not penalise him for letting rain water enter the basement.”
The high court stressed that police officers are respected because they arrest real criminals and not because they arrest innocent people, underscoring its disapproval of the action taken against the SUV driver in this case.
Meanwhile, civil services aspirants protesting against the deaths at a coaching centre in Rajendernagar continued their protest on Friday, which continued for the sixth day with many studying at the protest site.On the night of July 27, rain water poured into the basement of the IAS study circle at Rau in Old Rajendernagar, killing three students, Shreya Yadav, Tanya Soni and Nevin Dalvin.
Officials said the deaths of three civil services aspirants at the coaching centre were caused by lack of proper drainage system, inadequate safety measures and use of basement for commercial activities in violation of rules.
