Heat stroke has killed 59 people in Japan since April, according to the disaster management agency.

Parasols and thick necklaces that can be kept frozen are ubiquitous in Tokyo, and 56-year-old street performer Jiro Kan told AFP he was feeling the heat.

“After standing here for two hours, I was sweating so much that the sweat was coming out of my shirt. I was soaked,” said Kan, who was dressed in an all-yellow suit.

“Those used to dry climates such as the United States will find Japan’s heat and humidity more unbearable,” he said in tourist hotspot Asakusa.

Last month, Shizuoka, west of Tokyo, became the first region in Japan this year to reach 40 degrees Celsius — well above the 35 degrees Celsius threshold that authorities consider “extremely hot.”

Heat waves are becoming more common around the world, with the European Union’s climate monitor saying in July that the Earth experienced its hottest day on record.
