Maldives Ports Company Limited (MPL) and Uligam Council have signed an agreement to develop a marina in Uligam.

The agreement was signed on behalf of MPL by Mohammed Vajih Ibrahim, CEO of MPL, at a ceremony held at Uligam Council this morning.

Under the agreement, MPL will develop a yacht marina in Uligam and set up necessary facilities to service yachts.

MPL CEO Vajih said the actual work to set up a yacht marina in Uligam will begin this year. He said the work will be completed within six months after the actual work begins. He said the concept is currently under development and discussions are ongoing with investors.

“President Muizul’s promise was to expand Dhaka’s maritime sector. Many yachts have been visiting Uligam since ancient times. The villagers and the council are concerned that these boats are not able to provide the required services,” said Mohammed Vajeeh, CEO of MPL.

Vajeeh said MPL is also working on building offices for international banking services and maritime services. He said the service will also create more jobs. Vajeeh said the office space will be completed on the 10th of this month.

Uligam council chairman Muaz said developing a marina in Uligam was a “long-standing dream” of villagers. He said he had worked with previous governments to find ways to provide services for yachts.

“The previous government did not respond to our concerns (about the lack of a marina). I want to thank President Dr Mohammed Muizoo and the MPL for providing this opportunity to the village,” said Ahmed Muaz, chairman of the Uligamu committee.

Ha. Uligam is a port for a large number of yachts. Every year during the peak tourist season, a large number of yachts dock in the village and a large number of tourists flock to the village. However, one of the biggest challenges is the lack of tourist facilities in the village.
