An Australian female boxer warned on Wednesday it could be “extremely dangerous” after it was revealed that two women boxers at last year’s Paris Olympics had failed gender qualification tests.
Imani Khelif of Algeria will compete in the women’s 66kg category on Thursday, while Lin Yuting of Taiwan will compete in her first match in the 57kg category on Friday.
Caitlin Parker will not face either opponent as she is in the 75kg weight class, but she has made her stance clear.
“I don’t agree that this kind of behavior is allowed, especially in combat sports, because it can be very dangerous,” said the 28-year-old, who beat Mexico’s Vanessa Ortiz by unanimous points to reach the quarterfinals.
“It’s not that I haven’t fought people before, but for combat sports, it can be dangerous and should be seriously considered.
“It’s good that these things are coming to light and are being looked at and further studied.”
Khalif and Lin Dan were disqualified from participating in the 2023 World Championships in New Delhi, organized by the International Boxing Association (IBA), as they failed to pass the qualification test.
After undergoing “biochemical” testing mandated by FIBA, Jeremy Lin was stripped of his bronze medal.
However, due to management, financial and ethical issues with the AIBA, the IOC decided to hold the boxing tournament in the French capital.
IOC spokesman Mark Adams told reporters: “Every athlete competing in the women’s events … complies with the eligibility rules.
“Their passports show they are female and their passports also state they are female.
“These athletes (Khalif and Lin) have competed many times over the years, it’s not like they are new here, they also competed in Tokyo (2021).”
The IOC’s Paris-accredited media website acknowledged that the 25-year-old Khalif was disqualified from the world championships because his “testosterone levels were too high to meet the qualification standards.”
