Is Botswana failing its children?

Violence against children is a serious human rights violation with profound consequences for children’s well-being. Whether children are direct victims or witnesses, experiences of violence can lead to lasting physical, psychological and emotional damage.

On 19th February 2024, an incident of rape occurred in Mochudi and was reported to the Mochudi Police Station on 20th February 2024. A case was registered at the Mochudi Police Station and the suspect was arrested but released 48 hours later. In a span of a month, the nation has witnessed a series of heinous acts where children were killed by their biological fathers. On 8th July, a father killed his two young children in Francistown. On Wednesday 17th July, the nation woke up to the tragic events in Tatisiding. This follows similar incidents across the country including in Bobonong, Gaborone and Maun. These barbaric acts give us a clue to the collective psychosocial well-being of our society. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines child abuse as “all forms of physical and emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect and exploitation resulting in actual or potential harm to the health, development or dignity of the child.
