Photos of French President Emmanuel Macron and Sports Minister Amelie Oudia-Castra kissing each other on the neck during the opening ceremony of the Olympics have caused an uproar on social media.

In the photo, Macron grabs the minister’s arm and moves in to kiss him, while the minister places one hand on Macron’s arm and the other around his neck while kissing his cheek near his ear.

Since the photo went viral, reactions have been pouring in on social networks, with all sides being criticized for the move.
“I think this photo is inappropriate and unfit for the position of president and minister,” A user posted on X.
“Brigitte (Macron’s wife) won’t like it. Gabriel Attal pretends to look away! He doesn’t know where to stay!” Wrote another one.

The photo sparked a backlash and drew widespread attention after French magazine Madame Figaro published it, calling the kiss strange, the New York Post reported.
Oudia-Castra has stirred up quite a bit of controversy this year, taking a dip in the Seine earlier this month in an attempt to allay concerns among Olympic athletes about levels of E. coli and bacteria in the water.
However, many events, including the men’s triathlon, have been postponed due to water quality issues.
In January, Urdiale-Castella was given the additional post of education minister. However, her tenure was short-lived, as she was removed from the post less than a month after her criticism of state public schools came to light.
