July 30, 2024 (Tehran) – Sudan reopened its embassy in Tehran on Tuesday, restoring diplomatic relations with Iran after an eight-year hiatus.
Sudan’s acting Foreign Minister Hussein Awad Ali inaugurated the Iranian embassy in a ceremony attended by Iranian and Sudanese officials and diplomats from other countries.
Sudan severed ties with Iran after protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran in 2016. The decision was made by then-President Omar al-Bashir, who was ousted in a coup in 2019.
In October 2023, Sudan’s new government announced the restoration of relations with Iran. The two countries subsequently exchanged ambassadors and agreed to reopen their embassies.
The visiting senior Sudanese diplomat was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iran’s new president, Massoud Pezeshkian.
During a meeting with Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani, he stressed the Sudanese government’s commitment to strengthening relations with Iran, calling it a “friendly and important country.”
