The ‘Taamo’ card is a smart travel card designed to digitise and reduce the use of hard currency within the Gambia Transport Services Company (GTSC), thereby alleviating the inconvenience of customers who may run out of cash at any time.
In his speech, GTSC General Manager, Mr. Sidi Kani, said the achievement was a milestone and the first of its kind in the history of The Gambia.
“It is noteworthy that GTSC has been contributing to the growth of the Gambian economy by creating jobs and providing relatively safer, more reliable and more affordable modes of transportation,” he said.
Mr Kanyi further explained that the GTSC will officially launch the Taamo card on July 31, 2024, adding that Taamo is a term derived from the Mandinka language, meaning “to travel”.
According to him, it is a digital card preloaded with cash for paying transport fares to ensure the safety of passengers and provide a convenient, secure and affordable payment method.
In his speech, Mr. Saloum Malang, Chairman of the Board of Directors of GTSC, expressed his gratitude to the Gambian Government and TK Exports for sponsoring and overseeing the implementation of the Taamo project.
He said GTSC was able to provide buses to the University of The Gambia (UTG) to facilitate transportation for students.
Mr Malang thanked the Chairman, His Excellency Adama Barrow, and all GTSC staff for their continued commitment and dedication in providing excellent services to passengers.
