A police vigil was held hours after three children were knifed to death, before a police car was set on fire during protests.

The protest began just a few streets away from the vigil, near a mosque on St Luke’s Road in Southport.

Merseyside Police said an officer suffered a suspected broken nose during the riot at around 19:45 BST, and a police car was damaged and set on fire.

A police spokesman said a “large group of people – believed to be supporters of the English Defence League – began throwing objects at a local mosque in St Luke’s Road, Southport”.
