PARIS: Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova won three straight sets 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 to beat fourth seed Jasmine Paolini and advance to the quarterfinals, her second high-level defeat at the Paris Olympics after American Coco Gauff on Tuesday.
After leading 5-3 in the first set, the Italian’s form slipped and she had trouble returning some of Schmiedlova’s long shots, ultimately losing 7-5.
Paolini, a medal contender having reached the French Open and Wimbledon finals this year, breezed through the second set but made numerous unforced errors (52 to 32 in the match) and lapses in concentration, though she won the third set at 5-4.
