Crane Manufacturers Konecranes Establish a network in the U.S. to build large harbor cranes in the U.S. The network includes U.S. steel structure suppliers and subcontractors that meet U.S. domestic manufacturing standards.
The company said it is now able to manufacture its full range of port cranes with domestic manufacturing requirements in the United States, including the large STS cranes that unload cargo from ships into ports.

“Several Konecranes customers have expressed interest in U.S.-made port cranes, including STS cranes,” the company’s press release states.
Large harbor cranes at U.S. ports are primarily made by Chinese manufacturers. Concerns about possible spy devices in port equipment.
Kony said the program was an initiative of the U.S. government.
According to a White House press release, the combination of Finnish expertise and U.S. industrial capabilities will continue Konecranes’ position as a global leader in material handling solutions.
According to the White House, Konecranes is committed to growing its U.S. workforce as demand for cranes made by trusted suppliers increases.
“Konecranes estimates that each US-made STS crane requires 1,500 tons of US-made steel and more than 100,000 man-hours across the value chain,” A White House press release said.
No impact on recent performance
Konecranes expects the network to grow in several states, including Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin, over the next few years, and some of the company’s customers have expressed interest in U.S.-made cranes, including STS cranes.
As the manufacture and delivery of STS cranes takes several years, the company estimates that today’s announcement will have no short-term impact on its financial results.
Konecranes said it also has the capability to modernize existing port cranes according to the latest technology and cybersecurity standards.
“The modernization is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to improve the safety, productivity and responsibility of our customers’ operations,” the company said.
Konecranes has been operating in the United States for decades, with three facilities, approximately 2,200 employees and more than 60 offices in the United States.
