By evening, there was some hope. After speaking with Netanyahu himself, Harris insisted that “Israel has the right to defend itself, and how it does so is critical.” Harris said she had told Netanyahu that she was “deeply concerned about the magnitude of the suffering of the people of Gaza, including the death of too many innocent civilians.”
“What has happened in Gaza over the past nine months is appalling. Children are dying, people are desperate and hungry, fleeing for safety, sometimes for the second, third or fourth time,” she said. “We cannot turn a blind eye to these tragedies. We cannot numb ourselves to the suffering and I will not remain silent.”
“To all those who have called for a ceasefire; to all those who long for peace – I see you and I hear you. Let’s make a deal.”
