CENI proposes new dates

The Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) has proposed to postpone the municipal elections until December 11, 2024. The decision follows a statement by the CENI General Rapporteur, Soava Andriamarotafika, who stated in a letter that the postponement was for technical reasons from the Prime Minister. CENI recommends a date of December 11, 2024 “, he announced at a press conference.

The need to form a new government seems to be an obstacle to holding elections scheduled for November 6. In the current context, the Electoral College meeting scheduled before August 6 seems unlikely to happen, as there is no new government formed. But we still need to wait for the High Constitutional Court (HCC)’s opinion on this new proposal.

Another point raised was that if this new date is maintained, the elections might be held during the rainy season, which could complicate the smooth conduct of the polls.

The mayor’s term of office expires on January 10, 2024. The High Constitutional Court (HCC) confirmed in its opinion of January 25, 2024 that the mayor and city councillors will remain in office provisionally until their successors are elected. This situation highlights the urgency of clarifying the electoral calendar.

In any case, citizens and political actors are anxiously awaiting news on the evolution of the situation and compliance with the new deadlines announced, while preparing for important issues that will arise in the next municipal elections.
