Born in 1996, Mäkelä has had a brilliant career since he was a child. At the age of 12, he joined the conducting class of the Sibelius Academy Youth Department and studied under the famous conductor Jorma PanulaAfter six years, he ended his studies due to the high demand for conductors in Finland.
In 2016, Mäkelä became a client of London-based talent agency Harrison & Parrot.
In 2017 he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Since 2020, Makayla has also been Principal Conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra.
In 2027, Makayla will become the music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Founded in 1891, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is one of the oldest orchestras in the United States. Makayla will become the youngest music director in the history of an American orchestra.
