The Supreme Court’s verdict on the NEET-UG question paper leak officially ends the controversy, but the opposition is not ready to accept the verdict in its present form. The opposition says the National Examinations Agency needs to be restructured as it cannot conduct nationwide exams in its present form. The Supreme Court in its verdict yesterday concluded that the question paper leak took place locally in Bihar while maintaining that there was no systemic irregularity. The apex court rejected the demand for a re-examination of over 2.4 crore students who appeared for the NEET-UG 2024 examination.
What the opposition says
Former Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal said the National Testing Agency (NTA) needs a complete overhaul, adding that the government cannot conduct an all-India exam of this scale under the current system. “The Supreme Court has asked IIT Delhi to look into how these issues (exam paper leaks) were handled… Why is it that during this government, every exam is leaked? The question is who is involved in this, for whose benefit is the leak? Who are the people who have no merit but are getting jobs? The National Testing Agency (NTA) needs a complete overhaul. You cannot conduct an all-India exam of this scale under the current NTA system,” Sibal said.
He said: “The government is for everyone and the government should consider every section of young people taking the exam.”
Shiv Sena-UBT Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut said, “The Supreme Court should know what is happening in the country. The Supreme Court is the last ray of hope. If that ray of hope also does not give us a direction, then where do we go? Will the government come under pressure?”
VCK MP Thol. Thirumavalavan called the verdict shocking. “The Supreme Court’s directive is not in the favour of students affected by the NEET scam… The victims must appeal. This is the only solution,” he said.
What the government says
BJP leader and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the government is committed to a “zero error” exam system. “For us, zero tolerance for any irregularities, whether it is higher education exams or employment exams, is our top priority. Therefore, the Modi government has implemented strict laws like the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act… We presented our position to the Supreme Court, pledging that our government is committed to a transparent, tamper-free and zero error exam system,” Dharmendra Pradhan said.
Dharmendra Pradhan also announced the formation of a high-level committee to bring about an overhaul of the National Testing Agency (NTA). “In keeping with this commitment, we have announced the formation of a high-level committee to bring about an overhaul of the NTA. The committee is working wholeheartedly… The committee has collected expert opinions and studied various models… They will submit a report soon,” he said.
