Every year, a large number of new viruses, ransomware and other malware appear on the Internet – the ingenuity of hackers knows no bounds. So last year, India was hit by an unusual DISGOMOJI virus that received commands using emojis. Portal makeuseof.com Tell More about it.
What is DISGOMOJI
The US cybersecurity company Volexity first discovered the DISGOMOJI virus in June 2024. Experts say the virus is related to the Pakistani hacker group UTA0137 that attacked the Indian government.
The software infects computers running a Linux distribution called BOSS (Bharat Operating System Solutions), which is mainly used by Indian government agencies. But in theory, this means that DISGOMOJI can be used on any Linux system because… The virus is written in the flexible programming language Golang.
However, the most unusual feature of DISGOMOJI is that it uses Discord emojis to control infected devices. Instead of using text to enter commands, operators can send specific emojis. For example, the camera emoji takes a screenshot of the computer desktop, a thumbs up downloads a file to the computer, a thumbs down downloads a file, and so on.
How does the Discord virus work?
First, the malware needs to be installed on the victim’s computer. Typically, this is done by sending a fake document to the target’s mailbox, which automatically downloads the necessary files when opened.
Once launched, DISMOGOJI collects a lot of data about the PC. Local information, usernames and hostnames, the directory where the virus was installed, data from any connected USB devices. The virus then connects to a Discord server controlled by the hackers and waits for further instructions. To do this, the attackers use discord-c2, a special utility based on open source code.
