In 2022, the median annual living standard for residents of ordinary housing in metropolitan France was €24,330, virtually unchanged from 2021 (-0.1%). The living standards of the most ordinary and the wealthiest households also barely changed in 2022. As a result, the inequality indicator remains close to its 2021 level, one of the highest levels observed since 1996.
Inflation rose sharply in 2022. Several measures were introduced throughout the year to protect households’ purchasing power. Salaried employees also benefited from the improvement in the labor market. On the other hand, living standards were weighed down by the cessation of the last subsidies introduced during the health crisis to compensate for work interruptions and the phasing out of housing benefit reforms.
9.1 million people live below the income poverty line of €1,216 per person per month. The poverty rate remained roughly stable at 14.4% in 2022. Poverty intensity (measured as the difference between the median living standard of the poor and the poverty line) has decreased.
