Kathmandu, July 7. Nepali students who returned home after the Bangladesh riots met External Affairs Minister Dr Arju Rana Deuba on Monday and apprised them of the situation on the ground.
Nepali students stranded due to the ongoing unrest in Dhaka are returning home. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, 1,200 students have returned as of Sunday.
Some students who were studying medicine in colleges in Dhaka returned to Nepal on Sunday and reached the Ministry of External Affairs today and met Minister Rana. They said that due to the riots, Nepali and foreign students studying in local universities felt unsafe.
They informed that they were unable to contact their families, leave their residences and their students were also unable to reach out as internet and phone services were cut in and around Dhaka.
They stated that the Nepali Embassy in Dhaka has been contacting and coordinating for those who are in trouble and providing necessary assistance to those who want to come to Nepal, and although there is no such unsafe situation among students inside the college, they stated that they are providing assistance to those students who are afraid of not being able to contact their families due to the lack of internet, telephone, etc.
The students asked Minister Rana to take the initiative to protect the safety of their friends currently in Nepal and to use diplomatic means to minimize the impact of this migration on their studies.
The students demanded that the Nepali Embassy in Dhaka keep the contact details and data of all Nepalis and create an environment for them to be helped whenever they are in trouble.
At that time, Foreign Minister Dr. Rana advised against returning until the situation is peaceful and informed that the Nepali government is providing necessary support and coordination for the safety of Nepali students there and if they want to return home.
He said instructions have been given to provide necessary support to Nepali people there by setting up a ‘help desk’ in the ministry and launching the Nepal Embassy in Dhaka, mentioning that the Nepali government will support Nepali students through diplomatic means.
Protests against reservations in access to government services are currently ongoing in Bangladesh.
