Is the multi-investor a role model entrepreneur or a speculator? Tojner showed a talent for business very early. At the age of 20, he ran an ice cream stand in a busy part of Vienna and became a millionaire within a few years. The son of a plumber, he grew up in humble circumstances in The Hague, Lower Austria, studied law and business administration in Vienna and received his doctorate from two faculties. The fact that his career would focus on equity financing was already evident in his doctoral thesis entitled “Business and Legal Analysis of Venture Capital”. Tojner is the co-founder of bwin and Global Equity Partners and has invested in more than 50 young companies. In 2006, he founded the Montana Tech Components industrial group, which includes the companies Alu Menziken, Universal Alloy Corporation, Asta, Alpine Metal Tech, Aluflexpack – and Varta. One of his many companies (located on Mariahilfer Straße in Vienna) is called Erzengel Michael Beteiligungsverwaltung. Tojner has also been active in the real estate business since the 1990s. After Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, Tojner is the second Austrian to appear on the cover of the American business magazine Forbes. Forbes calls him “Mr. 300% Austria”. Varta’s setback is unlikely to slow him down.
