SecondThe Abados are the new champions of the West Indies Rising Stars U19 Regional Two-Day Championship.
The defending champions Jamaica U19 team continued their competition at the Arnosville Stadium in Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines on 72/2.
The match was hanging in the balance and everyone was waiting for their chance, Steve Wedderburn was dismissed last night on 39 but was unable to add to his score as he was bowled by fast bowler Jatario Prescod. Soon after his dismissal, his overnight partner Matthew Morgan was bowled by a brilliant knock from spin bowler Saurav Worrell and the score now read 79/4 with Barbados having the upper hand in the match.
Prescod struck again and removed Trevaun Williams for two runs, taking the score to 89/5.
Worrell then reentered the game and Brian Barnes was dismissed for 16, the score now 107/5, the sixth wicket was taken with the same score when Prescod bowled Michael Clarke for 10. The score was 112 and the eighth wicket was taken when Worrell bowled Jevone Wynter for four.
After 90 minutes of play that day, Jamaica decided to end the innings with 127 points, giving Barbados a 73-point lead and one step closer to the championship.
Worrell’s figures were 3/16 while Prescod’s were 3/51 as all their wickets were taken in the morning session.
With their lead eclipsed in the first innings, Jamaica’s only chance of regaining the title was to defeat Barbados in the second innings and secure victory before the end of the match.
All Barbados had to do was bat for the rest of the day to claim the 2024 Two-Day Championship, and that’s exactly what they did.
Joshua Morris became the highest scorer of the tournament with 62 runs (133 balls, 3 fours and 2 sixes) in his first over of the tournament. Kyle Jordan hit his second century of the tournament as he became the highest scorer of the tournament with 6 fours (95 balls, 52 runs). Their first over partnership scored 96 runs to seal the title for the Barbados boys.
Joshua Dorne and Zion Brathwaite, batsmen at number three and four respectively, both remained unbeaten to take the match to the final over, with Dorne batting patiently off 80 balls and scoring 29 runs, while Brathwaite scored 22 runs off 36 balls.
Barbados ended the day’s play at 172/2, taking a first innings lead in a tied match and securing a well-deserved victory in the two-day tournament.
The 50-match tournament begins on Tuesday and they will begin preparations for their quest for the double. (ZM)
