Israel’s military has issued conscription notices to 1,000 members of the ultra-Orthodox community, a move aimed at expanding the force but likely to further inflame tensions between religious and secular Israel.
In late June, the country’s Supreme Court ruled that ultra-Orthodox Jews must also serve in the military. Israel’s strict religious Jews were previously exempt from military service.
