Luxembourg Airport is continuing to expand and this year passenger traffic will exceed 5 million for the first time.
Luxair alone expects to reach 3 million passengers by 2030. However, some question whether the facility has the capacity to keep up with recent growth.
During a parliamentary inquiry, CSV’s Laurent Mosar described airport parking as a disaster, while Democratic Party Transport Minister Yuriko Backes responded by saying the number of car parks had increased slightly in recent years but admitted there was still room for improvement.
In another RTL interview, Luxembourg Airport CEO Alexandre Vlassac announced that 800 additional parking spaces had just opened this week.
15% of parking spaces will be available to passengers without reservations, but the airport still recommends booking in advance.
Bottleneck at Lux Airport
Although the additional 800 parking spaces are expected to completely solve the airport parking congestion problem, the airport still recommends that passengers arrive at the airport two hours before their flight departs.
Unfortunately, it does happen that regular passengers are unable to access the parking lot despite having a reservation. To this, Flassak responded:
“In this case, we can only recommend re-watching the instruction video and making sure the barcode is facing upwards, and if that doesn’t work, asking the desk rather than getting another ticket.”
We also ask our customers and employees to be more patient:
“At the moment the roundabout is a bottleneck for traffic – because of the extensive roadworks and traffic lights added to the tram construction site. Of course, we are delighted that trams will be servicing the airport early next year, but at the moment we do have heavy traffic, especially at peak times, due to all the roadworks.”
Luxair is ready for summer
Luxair, the main airline at Findel Airport and carrying half of the airport’s passengers, is happy with the current system. Thomas Fischer, commercial director of Luxair, said that last week (the first week of the holiday season), 38,000 passengers flew with Luxair without any major problems – a good start to the summer.
“Of course, you can see the construction going on at the moment, and everyone can see it, but it is only temporary – we have not noticed any particular problems for our customers or airport staff and assume there will be no problems this summer either.”
In related news, security lines are moving faster now than they were two years ago. In his parliamentary response, Bax explained that 75% of passengers now complete security in less than five minutes, while 95% of passengers pass through security in less than 15 minutes.
Post-holiday projects
Vlasak said that after the summer, waiting times should also be made more transparent:
“We will have wayfinding displays for the convenience of passengers, which will also show the waiting time, which queue is best to take and where it takes the least time etc.”
Luxair expects passenger numbers to grow from 2.5 million to 3 million by 2030. Although specific figures have not been made public, the airport expects the overall growth rate to remain stable.
CEO Alexander Flassak is confident the airport can handle this growth:
“It is still possible that we can optimise the terminal building itself, but in the long term, the expansion of the airport is of course inevitable, as the minister has already mentioned. We want to provide the infrastructure required for the expected growth, while knowing that there is still room for the building to be adapted and optimised. Some functions will be moved to the sky garden, which means we have space available for passengers. After the summer holidays, we will consider further options.”
