Nationalist MP Alex Borg said Enemalta only had one breakdown locator vehicle, which was currently being used in Malta, leaving Gozo villages without a solution.
He said Gozitans were being given “second-class” treatment after a cable fault in north-west Gozo left Għasri, Għarb, San Lawrenz and KerĽem without electricity.
As of Saturday afternoon, the areas remained without power after Malta Energy said three 11kV cable faults had occurred in Guthrie, affecting power supply to nearby areas. The power outage occurred at the same time as the failure in Geziracutting power to parts of the area, St Julian’s and St Givan.
Borg said a fault location vehicle was needed to identify the problem area, but Malta Energy’s only vehicle was currently in use in Malta.
“Common sense tells us that if the distribution network in an area, such as Gozo, is weak, then similar equipment should be permanently deployed in Gozo,” Mr Borg said, adding that residents were waiting to see when the power would be restored.
“It’s irresponsible to have a failure due to an aging distribution system; it’s an insult not to have the equipment to fix it,” Borg said.
He said that as MP for Gozo, his first priority after the National Party came to power would be to strengthen Gozo’s electricity distribution system. “It is a right, not a luxury,” he insisted.
