Ahead of his visit to the Pacific Leaders Forum, Prime Minister James Marape visited Indonesia to take part in the forum’s annual dialogue.

The Prime Minister said that as close neighbours with G20 economies and 280 million people, they need energy supplies and food.

“Indonesia is one of the world’s top 20 economies with a population of over 280 million people who need energy, food supply and trade to sustain their economic development, and Papua New Guinea is one of the three countries with the closest land border to Indonesia,” he said.

He said PNG’s relationship with Indonesia had been enhanced and he assured PNG that the Indonesian market was ready for PNG to enter.

“The level of our relationship with Indonesia has now been raised to the highest level, we are no longer just engaging in government-to-government exchanges as we were in the past,” he said.

Prime Minister Marape said an important memorandum of understanding was signed between the two countries’ transport departments.

“The Indonesian market is ready and likewise, Indonesian companies are willing to engage in equity partnerships with us. They have invested heavily in downstream processing and proposed improvements in their business models, with 51-49% equity arrangements in most of the large investments,” he said.

He said Papua New Guinea had also been offered the opportunity to send students to study at its medical school to help address the country’s shortage of health workers.

“We have signed four memorandums of understanding, two of which are in the field of transportation.
This means that licensed vehicles, licensed vessels, licensed aircraft moving back and forth between our sides must have identification and both sides can use the license to facilitate Indonesians to travel to Papua New Guinea, or Papua New Guineans to travel to Indonesia,” said Prime Minister Marape.
