Palau’s public schools began the new academic year on Wednesday, with classes held year-round, in stark contrast to private schools which resumed classes after the summer break.
Palau High School (PHS), the country’s only public high school, is currently in the process of dropping and adding classes, which ends tomorrow. This allows students to finalize their course selections. According to a staff member at the PHS registrar’s office, the final enrollment numbers will be announced next week.
Koror Elementary School (KES), one of the two largest public elementary schools in Palau, has 16 new kindergarten students, 10 transfer students, and 54 first grade students. Of the first grade students, 30 are new students and 24 are continuing students in the KES kindergarten program.
Another large public elementary school, George B. Harris Elementary School, reported about 50 new students. Enrollment has remained relatively stable, with no significant increases or decreases, according to the school secretary.
Private schools in Palau have different opening dates: Mindzenty High School opened on August 1, Emmaus-Bethania opened on August 12, and Belau Modekngei School opened on Monday. (By Olkeriil Eoghan Ngirudelsang)
