A catastrophic global network outage has thrown millions of people into chaos, affecting countries including the United States, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Television stations, airports and banks were forced offline and Windows computers suddenly shut down. Downdetector reported a surge in problems with Microsoft apps, banking websites and airline apps.
As of 8:30pm local time today, there is no indication that the global network outage will affect Tonga.
Cybersecurity researcher Troy Hunt wrote on Twitter that “something really weird is going on right now” as users around the world are experiencing a “blue screen of death” on their Windows PCs. Cybersecurity experts believe the outage is related to an issue with CrowdStrike antivirus software.
Imperum founder Senad Arun called the incident the “CrowdStrike Armageddon.” Reports showed major disruptions in New Zealand, including banking and transport delays, while Woolworths stores faced checkout system failures.
In Australia, supermarket customers were unable to purchase their weekly groceries after an IT outage affected checkout systems.
American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines have grounded flights worldwide because of communications problems, leaving frustrated passengers stranded at airports such as Los Angeles International Airport.
