Kathmandu, July 4. It was revealed that 2.5 kg of gold smuggled from Dubai by a gang had gone missing. Moreover, it was discovered that the police officer himself had traded for Rs 50 lakh to find the missing gold.
Sundar Nepali, 38, a senior police officer of the Rani Pokhari police station in the Kathmandu Valley, said that two and a half kilograms of gold that arrived at the Tribhuvan International Airport had been missing for five months and they would look for it.
According to the police’s Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), the gold smuggling case is being investigated and a case of fraud has been registered against the officer.
Be prepared to bring tickets and 20,000 gold
Furshanbu Sherpa called Vikas from Sindhupalchok, who had gone to Dubai in search of work, while Gunaraj Vick from Okhaldhunga was about to return home. That’s when they met Chema Sharma, also known as Chema Lama, who lived in Sindhupalchok.
He said he would buy a ticket back to Nepal and give 20,000 rupees on condition that he hide six Lepan-sized gold bars and bring them to Kathmandu. Both agreed that they wanted to go home and not look for work.
Chema put them in touch with Kshetra Bahadur Chhetri, known as Raju of Sintupalchowk. He was smuggling gold along with KD, an Indian citizen. As per the previous agreement, on 23 January 2080, Fursanbu and Gunaraj came to Kathmandu with the gold. But the news of the theft or disappearance of the gold reached Dubai but the person to whom Raju had asked to give the gold did not receive it.
The police ‘break-in’ happened.
After the 2.5 kg of gold sent on January 23 went missing, KD started questioning Raju. According to him, he was tortured. Then on January 26, Raju sent his wife Kalpana Magar to Kathmandu to search for the gold.
After coming to Kathmandu, Kalpana inquired about the gold through her acquaintance Bhagwan Pandey. She reached Gunaraj’s home Oldhunga and Furshanbu’s home Sindhupalchok. But it was not found in both. After this, Lord met senior police officer Sundar Nepali on February 20 and said that he would find someone who was searching for the gold. He contacted Kalpana’s husband Raju in Dubai.
Thereafter, the gold movers Gunaraj and Fursangbu and Chemas, who were suspected of robbing the gold, said it would cost them to check the travel history and places.Around 11 pm on February 29, Raju, who was in Dubai, called his wife Kalpana and told her to meet Havaldar Sundar in Chabahil.
Officer Sundar also reached a restaurant and thought, “The people who robbed the gold are near me, my sister-in-law should come.” There were 5 people wearing masks with Sundar. There, senior police officer Sundar also had a video call with Chema. He made a deal worth 50 lakh rupees and said that the gold would be returned.
According to Kalpana, 2.5 lakh of this amount was paid through e-service and 7.5 lakh was paid in cash. Sunder assured that the gold would be returned after collecting the remaining amount.
Raju, who was in Dubai, sent Rs 40 lakh through Hundi. Kumar Kami, Askar Joshi and one Don Shahi named Depen reached Chabahil with the same amount on 1st Chait. Senior police officer Sundar was yet to arrive.
The four persons arrested on the basis of information about hundi trading have been handed over to the Kathmandu District Police House for further investigation and action. Prior to this, there was no exact information about the gold smugglers. Hence, a case was registered against hundi trading and they were released after paying bail.
Voting has begun
After being released by the police, Kalpana requested the senior police officer not to return the gold. But he failed to return the gold. Kalpana himself approached the Central Bureau of Investigation (CIB) after not returning even Rs 10 lakh which was initially agreed.
According to his information, during the investigation conducted by CIB, not only 2.5 kg of gold was smuggled, but it was also revealed that the constable accepted the money and returned the gold.
Raju came to Dubai on a visit visa in 2019 and stayed there even after his visa expired. He had planned to return home in 2021 and met KD in a place called Ajman in Dubai. Later, according to KD’s plan, he himself admitted that he used to deliver KD’s gold to Kathmandu and work as a porter for Nepalese who were preparing to return to Nepal.
Raju, who contacted CIB, claimed that he was not the owner of the gold and KD gave him Dh250 as a reward for finding a mover.
The last time was on January 23, when 2.5 kg of gold was lost. CIB investigation found that after Furshanbu and Gunaraj flew from Dubai with 2.5 kg of gold, Chema also came to Kathmandu via India by flight.
Police investigations revealed that Chema also arrived at the international airport two hours after Fursanbu and Gunaraj, who were carrying gold, landed in Kathmandu.
According to CIB sources, Chema controlled Furshanbu and Gunaraj and looted gold. Chema changed his name to Mingmar Sharma while in police custody. He gave a statement saying that he sold the gold and gave him Rs 5 lakh. Mingma absconded.
CIB SP spokesperson Hovindra Bogti said that investigation into the incident is on and the persons who looted the gold are yet to be arrested. Police have registered a case of fraud against Valaldar Sundar who struck a deal worth Rs 50 lakh to search for smuggled gold.
