Donald Trump’s JD Vance’s Choice Analysts told CNA that if the former US president is re-elected, he will serve as the Republican vice presidential running mate, which may mean that he will take a tougher stance on China.
Tom Switzer, executive director of the Australian think tank Centre for Independent Studies, said: “Both parties agree to confront China as a rising power, and Vance wants to counter China’s growing technological and economic strength.”
Vance, a junior senator from Ohio, called China the “greatest threat” to the United States in an interview shortly after his election on Monday (July 15).
That aligns with Trump’s view — and even that of many Democrats — that China’s rise as the world’s factory has devastated U.S. manufacturing.
Switzer noted that many Republicans have gradually shifted their attention from Europe to Asia and are determined to coordinate those who oppose China’s ambitions to jointly confront Beijing.
“It supports tougher anti-China measures, including trade and high-tech warfare, developing closer ties with Taiwan, and refuting Beijing’s claim that much of the South China Sea is its territorial waters,” Switzer told CNA’s Asia First program.
Beijing responded to Vance’s remarks by saying it “has always opposed the United States using the China issue as an election issue.”
