TRON, Scotland: Tiger Woods had a horrible first-round performance at the British Open on Thursday, shooting eight over par, and Royal Troon took its toll on the three-time champion, who had nothing nice to say about it.
The American had six bogeys, two double bogeys and two birdies in his round of 79 and he admitted the lack of playing time may have affected his performance.
“I’m getting better as time goes on. I just wish I could play a little more, but I’m saving my energy for the majors,” said Woods, who has a limited schedule in 2021 after a car accident.
“Hopefully next year will be a little better than this year.”
Woods got off to a good start, holing in a long birdie putt on the par-4 third hole to huge cheers from the crowd.
However, play soon fell into disarray as the 15-time major champion bogeyed the fourth hole and got caught in a bunker on the fifth hole for double bogey, followed by two more bogeys on the front nine.
A birdie on the back nine didn’t help as Woods landed in the bushes, had double bogey on the sixth, another bogey on the 12th and two more bogeys on the final hole.
“I did a lot of things wrong today. I putted on the third hole and then I think I had three-putts three times today. I didn’t hit my irons very well and I didn’t give myself a lot of chances today,” Woods told reporters.
“I need to take some photos tomorrow with the temperature in the 60s so I have something to do over the weekend.”
The 48-year-old said this week he will continue to compete as long as he believes he can win.
“I thought I could play a little bit more earlier this year. I was a little too optimistic. I need to do more work in the gym and keep improving like we are,” he said.
