I strongly condemn the assassination attempt against US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Singapore is a relatively safe place, but we live in an unsafe world where people resort to violence for a variety of reasons, but whatever the reason, violence will not be tolerated, let alone the use of potentially lethal weapons.
Many people may have forgotten it now, but in Singapore, we have also experienced attacks on politicians.
In 2011, Seng Han Thong (SHT), the People’s Action Party MP for Yio Chu Kang, suffered burns on his face, neck and back after he was doused with water and set on fire by a disgruntled resident in retaliation for the resident’s failure to be elected to distribute financial assistance to needy elderly people.
Even back in 2006, the SHT was punched by a 74-year-old taxi driver for not helping him to restore his suspended driver’s license.
Both cases involved money, and in the latter case, the livelihood of an elderly taxi driver. I repeat, the latter case involved the livelihood of a 74-year-old taxi driver!
I don’t know how many of us care or can sympathize with the plight of the 74-year-old taxi driver, but I want to make it clear that I am not condoning or defending the actions of the old taxi driver. What he did was absolutely wrong. Period.
Times are getting tough for more and more people in Singapore because of the greed and mediocrity of the PAP government. I don’t think there will be much respite for most of our citizens in the future. Once the CDC vouchers and cash handouts taper off, the rising cost of living will be painful and long-lasting for many of our fellow citizens.
I do not advocate or support violence, but I wish our leaders who understand paying themselves millions of dollars in political salaries could truly feel how more and more of our struggling compatriots feel and worry about living in the most expensive country in the world.
Please don’t let them eat cake.
think.
