Russia is considering putting its own nuclear missiles on alert in response to a U.S. plan to deploy long-range missiles in Germany, with Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov telling reporters in Moscow he does not rule out the possibility.
“The system of agreements in the field of arms control has been completely destroyed, through the fault of Germany and especially the fault of the United States as the leader of NATO,” the diplomat said.
In this context, it is possible and necessary for Russia to develop countermeasures “without internal inhibitions.” Ryabkov said: “This is not a threat to anyone, but an opportunity to find the most effective algorithms to deal with evolving challenges, including from a cost perspective.”
Deployment of long-range missiles from 2026
During the NATO summit in Washington last week, the United States announced that it wants to deploy weapons systems in Germany again from 2026 with a range that can reach Russia.
These include Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of up to 2,500 kilometers, which can technically also be equipped with nuclear weapons, as well as SM-6 air defense missiles and newly developed hypersonic weapons.
The Kremlin was outraged and announced a tough response. Against this backdrop, discussions on Russia’s nuclear doctrine resumed in Moscow.
