Delhi: BJP calls for special parliament session to discuss electricity bill

Intensifying its attack on the ruling Awami League Party (AAP) over the issue of electricity bills, the BJP on Tuesday met Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel and demanded a special session of the House on the issue.

The BJP on Monday staged a protest outside offices of various power distribution companies in the national capital, alleging that residents were forced to pay “exorbitant” electricity bills due to “exorbitant” power purchase adjustment charge (PPAC) and other electricity charges.

PPAC is a surcharge that is used to compensate for fluctuations in power purchase costs incurred by distribution companies.

In a letter submitted to the Speaker, all seven BJP Delhi MPs said that exorbitant PPAC and other surcharges were included in every electricity bill, burning a hole in people’s pockets.

‘BJP is misleading the public’

In response, AAP asked the BJP to avoid “drama” and accused it of “misleading” people.

“Power prices in BJP-ruled states are the most expensive in the country,” AAP said in a statement.
