Shaurya Bawa reached the semi-finals of the World Junior Squash Championships and won a medal for India with a thrilling comeback.

Houston (USA): Shaurya Bawa became the second Indian male to reach the semifinals of the World Junior Squash Championships after Kush Kumar (2014).
The 18-year-old from Delhi, ranked 17/32, defeated Malaysia’s Low Wa-Sern 2-11, 11-4, 10-12, 11-8, 12-10 in the men’s quarter-finals to ensure India a medal.
The fierce battle lasted 80 minutes. Bawa fell behind 6-9 and 7-10 in the fifth game, but saved three match points and won the game.
Bawa defeated Loew in the semi-final, showing impressive determination and composure to fight back from three match points down to seal the win. After the victory, the Indian player fell to the ground, realizing his achievement.
He will face top seed Mohammed Zakaria of Egypt in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, compatriot Anahat Singh (seeded 5/8) was eliminated in the women’s quarterfinals for the third year in a row. The 16-year-old women’s national champion lost to Egypt’s Nadeen El Hammami in a five-set battle, 11-8, 11-9, 5-11, 10-12, 13-11.
El Hammami, who celebrated his 17th birthday just five days ago, started well against the 16-year-old Indian teenager, taking a 2-0 lead and defending well against Anahat’s attacks.
However, the Indian fought back strongly in the third game, narrowing the gap with a score of 11-5, and won the fourth game with a hard-fought victory of 12-10. When Anahat led 10-8 in the fifth game, she seemed to have completed the fight back, but Elhammamy’s brilliant performance forced the match into a tie-break.
Anahat earned another match point at 11-10 but was beaten by the Egyptian again, with El Hamami coming back strongly to seal the victory at 13-11 and level the score at 3-2.
