Pakistan’s Information Minister has declared former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) an illegal political party. Meanwhile, Minister Ataullah Tarar said Khan was charged with treason.
He said the government could prove that the PTI was illegally funded by foreign countries. He also called it a party that encouraged riots. Analysts believe the Pakistani government could prosecute the party and dissolve it.
He described the PTI as a party that encouraged unrest, linking Khan’s arrest to the protests that saw hundreds of thousands of his supporters take to the streets. Last year’s protests saw clashes between police and civilians and some protesters trying to attack Pakistani military bases.
“The federal government will take up the issue of abolishing the PTI,” Tarar said, adding that it was ready to refer the matter to the cabinet for a decision. Besides, Khan and former president Arif Alvi were charged with treason in the Supreme Court, he said.
The PTI expressed concern over Tarar’s remarks. Zulfiqar Bukhari, a close associate of Khan, described it as the beginning of a military regime. He said the government was under pressure because of the achievements of the PTI.
As the political situation in Pakistan heats up, the country is forced to take measures such as raising taxes to overcome the economic crisis. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has provided $7 billion in aid, including raising agricultural taxes. However, analysts believe that this will not be accepted by ordinary Pakistanis.
“This is a weak government. Many people question the effectiveness of this government. The government is trying to put Imran Khan in jail. And, it is trying to stay in the IMF bailout program,” said economist Khurram Hussain.
The Supreme Court recently gave a major victory to the PTI as the Pakistani government tried to dismantle the PTI and silence hundreds of thousands of people instead of trying to overcome economic challenges.
As a result, the Supreme Court recently blocked an attempt by the country’s Election Commission to isolate PTI members from contesting seats reserved for political parties in the legislature. The Supreme Court ruling will give the PTI a chance to contest 20 more constituencies and increase its number of MPs in parliament.
Climate analysts say the Pakistani government has started the process of dissolving the Pakistan People’s Party, which is pressuring the government through the international arena. Analysts say the PTI is trying to pressure the government through the US legislature to conduct a thorough investigation into allegations of fraud in the country’s February 8 general elections.
The PTI also pushed for a full, independent audit of the elections before the IMF provides financial assistance to the Pakistani government. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan expressed concern over Information Minister Tarar’s announcement that the government was trying to dissolve the Ministry of Public Transport of Pakistan. It called on the government to withdraw the decision.
Pakistan, a country of 240 million people, has been plagued by political turmoil since Khan was removed as prime minister in 2022 due to a no-confidence motion. Khan claimed that the country’s influential army generals were behind the no-confidence vote against him. However, the military denied the allegations. No prime minister has served a full five-year term since Pakistan gained independence in 1947.
