In light of the recent criticisms on the team’s performance, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced major changes in the system to improve the quality of cricket. Naqvi discussed the same with other PCB stakeholders as well as the head coaches of the white and red teams – Gary Kirsten and Jason GillespieNaqvi also revealed that both Kirsten and Gillespie will work with former players Mohammed Yusuf and Asad Shafiqand the current captain of both the white-ball and red-ball formats.
In coverage of the star walker Shaheen Afridi Naqvi showed disrespect for head coach Gary Kersten, insisting there would be zero tolerance for disciplinary violations. He also warned players not to indulge in groupism within the team.
The PCB has made physical fitness a key part of the selection process, adding that players will have to undergo testing every three months.
“There will be no compromise on discipline. There will be a zero-tolerance policy for players who violate discipline. There should be unity and consensus within the team. Grouping of players will not be tolerated. The management should take strict action on grouping. Players who violate discipline will not have a place in the team. Do not accept my advice on any player who violates discipline,” Naqvi said in a statement released by the PCB.
Naqvi also assured that the board will give Kirsten and Gillespie ample freedom to improve the state of the national team.
“Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie have been given full authority. I have every confidence in them. Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie have been given free rein. Hopefully they both get the best results,” he added.
In addition, the two sides also decided that when considering players’ applications for national Olympic committees to participate in foreign leagues, strict technical guidance will be followed, with the main goal of ensuring the players’ physical fitness and time playing for the national team.
“Only players with high physical fitness and performance standards will be recognized by the NOC, thus ensuring high standards of representation in international leagues,” the official said.
The meeting also decided that all players must participate in domestic cricket and asked the selectors to monitor the same before selecting any player for the national team.
The official said that everyone present at the meeting unanimously decided to adopt a zero-tolerance attitude towards disciplinary violations and to impose severe penalties on players who form cliques in order to maintain the team’s unity and morale.
We are also currently planning to upgrade high performance centres across the country to strengthen grassroots cricket.
New centers are coming to Islamabad and Peshawar, and Gillespie and Kirsten will oversee these initiatives.
