London: Yamaha said on Monday that Australian rider Remy Gardner will replace injured MotoGP wildcard rider Cal Crutchlow at next month’s British home grand prix.

Gardner, 26, the son of 1987 world champion Wayne, replaced injured Yamaha Spaniard Alex Rins at the July 7 race in Germany.

Crutchlow, who retired from full-time racing at the end of the 2020 season, was due to be the only British driver in the top series at Silverstone but was forced to withdraw due to a hand injury.

“I had hand surgery two months ago, but the recovery was not as good as expected, which led to another operation and complications,” said the 38-year-old team test driver.

“It’s important that I get my hand fully healed before attempting to ride a MotoGP bike.”

Rins is expected to be fully fit by the time of the Silverstone race.
