The Isle of Man submits its bid to host the 2029 Island Games to the IIGA

The Isle of Man’s bid to host the 2029 Island Games was successful.

It comes after the International Island Games Association (IIGA) unanimously backed Orkney’s move on Saturday.

The IIGA had previously recommended the Isle of Man as the venue for the multi-sport event.

From 24 member islands Will compete 14 disciplines The Islanders’ Mini Olympics attracted about 1,000 fans.

Andrew Inkster, Interim Chairman of IIGA, said:

“We are delighted to have received the Isle of Man’s bid and even more delighted to confirm that our event will return to its spiritual home in 2029.

“We have been growing steadily since the Isle of Man hosted the first event in 1985 and I am confident that the Isle of Man will build on this success.”

The Isle of Man government has pledged to improve some facilities, including the track and stands at the National Sports Centre, which are a legacy of past Olympic Games.

MHK Chief Minister Alfred Cannan said:

“This is a great opportunity to showcase the Isle of Man to new audiences and a great chance for Manx athletes to test themselves against other Islanders on Manx soil.

“Hosting the Games supports several key objectives of the Government’s Island Plan and Economic Strategy to attract more visitors and showcase the islands we are so proud of.”

Past athletes who have represented the Isle of Man at the Island Games

Daphne Caine, Secretary of State for Education, Sport and Culture, added:

“I am sure the Isle of Man will host a memorable tournament.

“In 2029, we will be delighted to welcome thousands of athletes from around the world, as well as their coaches, families and friends to our unique biosphere.”

About 1,200 volunteers are needed over five years to run this community-focused event.
