Despite the postponement of major Pride events last month due to Hurricane Beryl, yesterday’s Pride parade was rain-free.
Dozens of people from the LGBT community and various allies marched through Bridgetown starting at 3:30 p.m. Pride Month, The festival is officially celebrated in June.
The parade was originally scheduled for June 30, and parade organizer Equals President Luke Lascaris said the event was held as a way to celebrate the community’s achievements and continue its advocacy.
He acknowledged that some people may not understand the significance of the celebration because they believe the community is not discriminated against, but Laskaris said that is not the case.

“People still face discrimination and stigma. The sodomy law was not repealed until 2022, and only recently a law was enacted to ensure people are not discriminated against because of their sexual orientation,” he said.
Laskaris gave an example of how some people can belittle or doubt the challenges faced by minority groups.
“In America, for example, white people will say the same thing about African Americans; ‘You’re not discriminated against, you’re not lynched, times have progressed’. People can say similar things about the LGBT community here… but it’s simply not true,” he added.
