CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Chattanoogan.com) – The Signal Hill Council approved a plan to finally begin repairing and rebuilding sidewalks near the Old Town area.
Work has been on hold for years after the Tennessee Department of Transportation awarded a grant for the project. The original scope of work exceeded the amount of money allocated for the project due to state demand and year-over-year increases in material and labor prices. To restart the sidewalk project, Public Works Director Wesley Stokes developed a plan to reduce the scope of work to fit the remaining amount of the TDOT grant. Beginning this fall, the Public Works Department will replace and rehabilitate the corridor areas in the worst condition. Subcontracted areas will be completed over two to three years.
Another major project that will soon begin is the Department of Water and Wastewater’s repair of the Signal Hill sewer to prevent entry and infiltration into the sanitary sewer system.

Beginning this fall, the Department of Public Works will replace and repair the areas of sidewalk that are in the worst condition. The areas that are outsourced will be completed in two to three years.
Another large project that will soon begin construction is the Water and Wastewater Authority’s rehabilitation of the Signal Hill sewer to prevent sewage from flowing into and seeping into the sanitary sewer system.
