More than two dozen former Democratic congressmen called on President Joe Biden in an open letter on Friday to allow the faction to hold an “open” convention next month or otherwise allow the submission of alternative presidential nominees.

“President Biden can best serve the country he loves if he releases the delegates who agree with his re-election campaign. If he decides to do that, it will mean we will hold a public meeting in August. We ask that he make that decision,” the 24 former lawmakers said in the letter published by Politico.

They added: “We don’t want to say we have another candidate to take his place,” however, “we believe one or more Democratic candidates will step forward.”

The text added that the “President’s integrity and vision remain intact” but that the “energy and stamina required to run for and serve a new term have diminished”. “This issue has been plaguing the country for months and reached a fever pitch around the June 27 debate,” the former lawmaker explained.

Joe Biden has faced a wave of criticism and questioning within his party in recent weeks following his disastrous televised altercation with Donald Trump.

About 15 current Democratic members of Congress have publicly urged the US president to withdraw his candidacy before the August convention in Chicago, where he is expected to formally accept the appointment.

For the open delegation signatories, who did not explicitly call for President Biden to retire, an “open” convention would restore “optimism and enthusiasm,” would “energize the party” and “capture the interest of voters, especially young people and marginalized groups who have not been inspired by the options on offer.”
