Manx Care became aware of the recent concerns through media information shared by the Isle of Man Police on the evening of Monday 15 April regarding recent heroin overdoses.
The Drug and Alcohol Team (DAT) provides support to anyone who wishes to access substance misuse treatment services.
You can self-refer on +44 1624 617889 or attend the DAT at Reayrt Noa at Noble’s Hospital Site between 9am and 5pm. Alternatively, support is available through Motiv8, free on 08081 624627.
If you or someone you know is at risk for an opioid overdose, naloxone (a life-saving medication that can temporarily reverse the effects of an overdose of heroin or other opioids) is also available through DAT and partner agency Motiv8.
The next Motiv8 pop-up event will be held at Café Laare, Lord Street, Douglas, from 11am to 3pm on Thursday, April 18, where the kits will be handed out. Thereafter, pop-up events will be held weekly at Motiv8, 90-92a Woodbourne Road, Douglas, from 12pm to 2pm.
The main signs of a suspected overdose to watch out for are:
- Pinpoint students
- Breathing problems – breathing becomes shallow, slow, or stops
- Grunting, snoring, or choking sounds when breathing
- Skin color changes—pale, clammy
- Bluish lips or nails
- No response to noise or touch
- Loss of consciousness
If you suspect an overdose, call 999 for emergency medical services.
